Coaches for Winter Training 2017
Jamie McWilliam – Head Coach, Alpine Racing
BASI Level 2 Instructor (2012) and UKCP Level 2. Member of Cairngorm Ski Club since 2000. I started out as a trainee with the club in 2002 and competed in the Scottish Children and Junior Ski Racing Circuit. I also competed in the British Childrens Championships. After two years as an Assistant Coach, I am now starting my third year as a Coach. I am currently Studying Sports Coaching at Edinburgh College. Having skied throughout Europe, I appreciate how much learning to ski on the Cairngorms has set me up for a career in Coaching and shredding the Gnar. I now know that the saying “If you can ski in Scotland, you can ski anywhere in the world” holds true!
Mikey Jechacy – Coaching Adviser, Freestyle
UKCP FreeSKI Level 2 Coach.
As a resident of Aviemore I began skiing at a young age, at Cairngorm and the Lecht. I began skiing competetively with Cairngorm Ski Club in 1989.
Following this I joined the Scottish Ski Team in 1999 and raced full time until 2003 gaining podiums in the British Championships and in many national and international races. Having retired from full time skiing I was the Head Coach with Cairngorm Ski Club from 2004 to 2007, during this time I attended the world student games as both an athlete and coach, and began to develop my passion for freestyle skiing.
In 2007 I traveled to New Zealand firstly to work on my own freestyle skiing, however, I became involved with New Zealand Alpine development teams and continued to work with them until 2013. With our training base in Switzerland for the Northern hemisphere season we were able to run some very successful programs with some great athletes being produced in both Alpine and freestyle skiing, many of whom have continued to ski at Olymipic and World Championship level.
Now having a young family I am enjoying spending most of my time at home in Aviemore and look forward to building a structured and sucessful training program for Park and Pipe skiing here at home, while also having fun skiing with you all at Cairngorm.
Hammy Morrison- Alpine Coach (Saturday/Sunday)
BASI Level 2, UKCP Level 1 Coach. I have been skiing for many moons and love skiing in all its forms.
I have had 17 ski seasons, 3 in France, 4 traveling all over the snowy mountains. 1 in Canada, 1 in Italy and the rest in Scotland. I have been a lifty, instructor, a ski tech and a ski coach. I just like to be involved in as many aspects in the mountain as possible. I have been involved with the ski club since the epic winter of 2010. I love passing my passion of skiing on to everyone, and working with enthusiastic shredders is a great thing.
Gary Todd – U12 Alpine Programme Coach
I’m delighted to have been invited to join the CSC coaching team for 2015-16 and I’m really looking forward to building on the club’s existing U12 race programme.
My experience in snowsports coaching, instructing and guiding is extensive. My specialist coaching interest is in developing entry level athletes and facilitating them to excel. Whilst my initial alpine race coaching experience was enhanced as a member of the Canadian Ski Coaches Federation, I have continued to develop my professional practice through new and progressive coaching methods. During my coaching career, I have been privileged to have coached some of Scotland’s top children racers and have led a number of programs, including the FASST U12 race camp programme at various alpine championships. I am also Head Coach with Muckhart and District Snowsports Club which runs an artificial based race training programme. In addition to skiing, I hold a range of qualifications in mountaineering, rock climbing, mountain biking, various watersports and outdoor education. I am currently appointed as a training mentor and assessor for the UKCP L1 scheme and have experience of supporting candidates to successfully achieve ‘Licensed’ coach status.
Julie Porteous – Alpine Coach
BASI Level 2 Coach. Skiing for me started at the tender age of 4 on the fantastic dry mat of Bearsden Ski Club in Glasgow. Having graduated through the Bearsden system – from racing to Scottish and British standards to coaching, I moved abroad to work as a ski instructor in the winter and continue my career as a physiotherapist in the summer months.
I have been fortunate enough to ski all over the world and meet some fantastic people. Since returning to Scotland 5 years ago I have been firmly based in Aviemore (with no intention of leaving!), where I work as a private full-time physiotherapist. I am particularly passionate about ski mountaineering and exploring ‘over the back,’ but equally enjoy hammering down a race piste – fingers crossed for euro-test success this season. This will be my 4 or 5th season with the club and looking forward to another fantastic season with some motivated children.
John McCook – Alpine Coach
BASI Level 2 qualified coach. I first started coaching with the club around four years ago. Over this time, I have also been involved in coaching many other sports including swimming, football, golf and many more!
I first started training with the club as a youngster in the winter of 2000. Coaching has always been an interest of mine and in 2012 I graduated with an HND in Sports Coaching and Development of Sport from Aberdeen College while also working as a youth coach at Aberdeen Football Club. Now though, I am a 3rd year student at Stirling University and while there is a lot of work, I always make sure there is plenty time for participating in sport!
I currently hold my BASI 2 coaching license and I am looking to start working on my level 3 as soon as possible. Fingers crossed for a cold and snowy winter!
Amanda Shephard – Alpine Coach
Like the other coaches I started skiing at a young age and was instantly hooked. Not in the race scene, I went down the Instructor route so I was able to keep skiing full time and make it a career.
Always working hard to keep learning and progress my skills, I have worked winters on Cairngorm Mountain ever since, and have had the pleasure to work alongside some of the most fantastic instructors and coaches in the world. I co-owned and directed the Ski and Snowboard School and very proudly established the highly successful Snowlimit children’s programme which ran for 12 years and taught over 2000 kids to ski and snowboard.
I absolutely love to teach and am always very excited to pass on my passion, knowledge and experience to others in a relaxed and fun environment.
Oh and the qualification bit… BASI Level 3 Ski; BASI Level 2 Snowboard; BASI Level 2 Alpine Coach; Also qualified in Mountain Biking, Tennis and Sailing to keep me out of trouble in the summer!
UKCP level 1 coach.
I started skiing when I was 4 years old and have been involved in ski racing since about the age of 10. I started skiing at Cairngorm about 8 years ago. In my time I have trained and competed in countries like France, Italy and Austria. My favourite ski resort is Hintertux in Austria. I have raced in many different events at in Scotland and abroad including the British children’s championships. This has granted me fantastic experience and knowledge which I am looking forward to sharing with the trainees at Cairngorm ski club.
Consultant coaches are coaches affiliated to the club who provide expertise and input on an ad-hoc basis and help us with our general coach and club development.
Skiing has been a big part of my life and I was lucky to grow up ‘shredding the gorm’ before the term shred was even hip!
