Happy New Year!
A very warm welcome to those new to the club and welcome back to those who have trained with us before.
Our training programme will start this weekend for all groups, the latest forecast does have some snow in it but the amount is a little uncertain so fingers crossed that we get the programme off to a great start on snow at Cairngorm Mountain. Regardless of snow conditions we will train this weekend, keen an eye on the Facebook Page for updates.
Initial training groups are now posted on the website, below are groups with coach allocation for week 1.
We have a great coaching team this year; we welcome back Jamie as Head Coach, Hammy, John, Sean, Thomas, Seoras. We are delighted to welcome new coaches Amanda Shephard, Ross Dunn and Rosie Latto and welcome back Julie Portious after a long term injury. For Freestyle Stevie and Kate will be working with us again and Lewis McWilliam will cover both freestyle and Alpine.
Gary Todd, who was unable to commit to the full programme this year, will be working with us from time to time and Julian Jennings will also help us out when we need cover. Both will be working with us this coming weekend.
Here is a summary of arrangements for the race and freestyle coaching programmes:-
MEETING PLACE – We will meet at the exit to the Funicular Railway. This is located on the left as you head towards the hill from the top carpark and is the door before the ticket office (sign posted toilets and lift to funicular). We will meet upstairs. Space is limited and there will be no place to leave any personal effects so we recommend that all trainees get ready at their car and leave shoes etc in the car.
ATTENDANCE REGISTER – A member of the club will be taking a “register” of trainees attending each week so we know exactly who is on the hill, please ensure that you have reported to this person who should be obvious.
MEETING TIME – We need to be ready to go for 8.30 so we can be on the first uplift available. We recommend that everybody is there by 8.20 at the latest. If you are late it is your responsibility to find the group. However, every coach and myself will have radios so if you approach any group or myself we should be able to find out where your group is and agree a meeting place.
EQUIPMENT – Please ensure that all equipment fits and is in good shape prior to training (sounds like an obvious one but we have had folks turn up to find that boots don’t fit any more and spend the morning in Ski Hire).
NO HELMET – NO SKI
CLOTHING – It can be bitterly cold so please ensure all athletes are appropriately dressed for the conditions. Lots of layers.
PACKED LUNCH & BACK PACK – packed lunches (and anything else that will be required for the day) will be taken out with trainees in the morning. We will use the Shieling at the mid station as a base for the day and generally to eat lunch.
FINISH TIME – Training will finish between 3 and 3.30, children will be reunited with parents outside the funicular exit. It is really important that you are available to collect your child as soon as training ends.
CODE OF CONDUCT – All trainees and parents are required to sign a code of conduct, if you have not signed one already some will be available on the first day of training.
STORM DAYS – If the weather does not permit us to train on the hill we will offer training at the Lecht if they are open and we will offer Dry Land Training for all trainees, this will either take place at Glenmore Lodge or in the large covered area at Badaguish.
COMMUNICATION – We will endeavour to make a decision about the following weekends training using weather forecasts on Thursday evening. The main forecasts we use are Mountain Weather Information Service and for longer term forecasts Snow-Forecast.com. If the forecast is marginal we will delay the decision until Friday or, in a worst case scenario, even very early Saturday morning. Updates will be posted on the club Facebook Page.
FEEDBACK – The coaches will endeavour to speak with each parent at the end of each session to offer feedback. Please feel free to approach the coach or head coach for feedback at anytime. If you wish to discuss any other aspect of the programme or the club at anytime please also feel free to speak with either myself, any coach or any other committee member. The most important thing to us is that our trainees have fun so if there is a problem please tell us and we will do our best to fix it. Each trainee will have a training log.
VIDEO ANALYSIS & PHOTOGRAPHY – We will again use video analysis, we propose to publish these for athletes and parents to review on youtube with links from our Facebook page and website. The videos will not be private but will be “unlisted” so you will only be able to find them if you have the link or from our channel. Also we will take photographs of athletes whilst training and those who medal at events etc.. for our own purposes and for the purposes of promoting the club. If you have any objection to any of this then please let us know by writing to email@example.com
PARENTS ON THE HILL – It is important that parents remain on the hill during training in case of an accident or hill evacuation. For non skiers you may wish to nominate another parent to be responsible for your own kids, that is fine so long as somebody is there and the trainee knows who.
As we are sure you are aware the club is run by volunteers and employs some of the best quality coaches. Our training programme is heavily subsidised by the fund raising activities of the club (normally to the tune of between £3,000 and £8,000 per year). In order to attract quality coaches we need to offer them secure employment. We, therefore, operate on the basis that if we train (on snow or dry land) you pay unless prior agreement is obtained from the coaching convener (myself). We would only normally waive training fees in the event of injury or illness. If an athlete is not to attend training for any reason then it would be great if you would let us know so we are not waiting or looking out for them, however, you would still be expected to pay for the session.
This season we will be using a training log to record progress and goals. If you came along to the meet the coaches day please bring your book with you at the weekend. For others we will have books for you at the weekend. Please keep the book with your packed lunch so it doesn’t get “weathered” on the hill.
If you have any queries please drop me an email firstname.lastname@example.org and I will be happy to reply or give you a call.
We very much look forward to welcoming all our members old and new and most importantly to having a fun and successful season.
